Why Devon Rex Cats Make Such Wonderful Pets

There is so much to love about the Devon Rex! Their huge ears, expressive eyes, curly coats, and adorable pixie-like faces may be what first gets your attention, but their personality is what really makes people fall in love with them. Devon Rex cats are affectionate, playful, intelligent, curious, and incredibly people-oriented. They aren't usually the type of cat that wants to sit across the room and watch what you're doing. They want to be right there with you, whether that means following you around the house, climbing onto your shoulder, helping with whatever you're doing, or curling up in your lap.

Devon Rex Personality & Temperament

Devon Rex cats are known for their sweet, outgoing, and affectionate personalities. They tend to form very strong bonds with their families and genuinely enjoy being around people. Many will follow their favorite person from room to room, greet them when they come home, cuddle under the blankets, or find the warmest lap in the house.

Are Devon Rex Good With Children and Other Pets?

Devon Rex can make wonderful family pets and generally do very well with children, other cats, and cat-friendly dogs when properly introduced. Their playful and social personalities often make them especially happy in homes where they have people or other pets to interact with.

Because our kittens are raised inside our home with lots of daily handling and normal household activity, we want them to grow up comfortable being part of a family. Devon Rex tend to enjoy attention and companionship, so many are perfectly happy having another friendly cat or dog to play with, cuddle with, and keep them company.

As with any breed, children should be taught how to handle kittens gently, and introductions to existing pets should be done gradually so everyone has time to adjust.

Intelligence, Playfulness & Their Dog-Like Personality

One of the most entertaining things about Devon Rex cats is just how smart and playful they can be. They're curious about everything and often want to investigate whatever their people are doing. Many enjoy interactive toys, climbing, learning routines, playing fetch, and figuring out how to get into places you were absolutely certain they couldn't reach!

Their outgoing, interactive nature is one reason Devon Rex are often described as having a dog-like personality. They may greet you at the door, follow you through the house, come when called, carry toys around, or insist on being involved in whatever is happening.

Devon Rex Coat, Shedding & Grooming

One of the most unique things about the Devon Rex is their soft, wavy coat. Unlike most cats, Devon Rex have very little guard hair, and their coat is made up mostly of soft, fine undercoat hairs, which gives them their distinctive curly appearance and velvety feel. Their coats can vary quite a bit from cat to cat. Some have beautiful waves or curls covering most of their body, while others may have a thinner or more delicate coat.

Their unusual coat also means their grooming needs are a little different from those of most cats. Devon Rex generally don't need regular brushing, and too much brushing or rough grooming can actually damage their delicate hairs. They do, however, need some basic coat, skin, ear, and nail care to keep them looking and feeling their best.​​​​​​

Do Devon Rex Cats Shed?

Yes, Devon Rex cats do shed, but they generally shed less noticeably than many other cat breeds. Because their coat is short, fine, and much lighter than the typical cat coat, you may notice less loose hair around your home, on furniture, and on clothing.

Their amount of shedding can vary from one cat to another and may also change with age, season, health, and coat type. So while it wouldn't be accurate to call a Devon Rex completely non-shedding, their unusual coat is one of the reasons people looking for a lower-shedding cat are often attracted to the breed.

Are Devon Rex Cats Hypoallergenic?

Devon Rex cats are sometimes described as hypoallergenic, but no cat breed is truly hypoallergenic. Most people with cat allergies react to proteins produced by the cat, including Fel d 1, rather than simply being allergic to cat hair itself.

Because Devon Rex tend to have less hair and may shed less noticeably than many other breeds, some people with cat allergies find that they tolerate them better. However, that varies greatly from person to person, and someone who is allergic to cats can absolutely still have an allergic reaction to a Devon Rex.

If allergies are a concern, we recommend spending time around Devon Rex cats before deciding whether the breed is right for your family rather than assuming their curly coat means they won't cause an allergic reaction.​​​​​

How Much Grooming Does a Devon Rex Need?

Devon Rexes are generally a low-maintenance breed when it comes to brushing, but low-maintenance doesn't mean no maintenance. Their delicate curly coats usually don't need traditional brushing and should be handled gently so the fine hairs aren't damaged.

Some Devon Rex can develop an oily feel to their skin or coat and may occasionally need a gentle bath. Their large ears can also accumulate wax and oil, so ears should be checked regularly and cleaned when needed. Routine nail trimming and basic dental care are important as well.
