🐾 Are Ragdoll Cats Good Family Pets?
One of the things we love most about Ragdolls is how naturally they seem to become part of the family. They’re usually affectionate, easygoing cats that enjoy being around their people rather than spending all day off by themselves. Ours tend to want to know what everyone is doing, whether that means following us from room to room, stretching out nearby while we’re busy, or climbing up beside someone when it’s time to relax. They can be wonderfully cuddly, but they also have a playful, silly side that makes them a lot of fun to live with.
Ragdolls can be especially nice for families with children because of their generally gentle, social nature. That doesn’t mean every Ragdoll has the exact same personality. Some are total lap cats, some would rather lie beside you, and others are busy little social butterflies who want to be involved in everything. After raising so many kittens, we’ve learned that their individual personalities are part of what makes them so much fun. 🐾 What Is the Difference Between Ragdoll Colors and Patterns?
Ragdolls come in several beautiful colors and patterns, and all the terminology can be a little confusing when you're first learning about the breed. Color, pattern, and lynx markings describe different parts of a Ragdoll's appearance, and once you know what each one means, it becomes much easier to tell them apart.
Ragdoll Colors
A Ragdoll's color refers to the color you see developing on the points of the cat, particularly the face, ears, legs, and tail. Seal and blue are probably the two colors most people recognize, but Ragdolls can also come in chocolate, lilac, flame (red), cream, and tortie variations. Each color can look a little different depending on the pattern, which is why two Ragdolls of the same color can still look completely different from one another.
Ragdoll Patterns
The pattern describes how the color and white markings are arranged on the cat. Colorpoint Ragdolls have darker points without white markings, mitted Ragdolls have those adorable white feet, and bicolors have more white on their bodies and typically have the beautiful white inverted "V" on their faces.
Then there is lynx, which adds tabby-like striping to the Ragdoll's points. You'll often notice cute little stripes across the face, around the eyes and cheeks, as well as on the legs and tail. We especially love the lynx markings on their faces because they can make their expressions look even sweeter. Why Do Ragdoll Cats Change Color?
Ragdolls are a pointed breed, and one of the most fascinating things about them is that their coloring is temperature-sensitive. Their pigment develops more strongly on the cooler areas of the body, which is why the ears, face, legs, and tail become darker while the warmer center of the body generally stays lighter. Ragdoll kittens are born very light, often nearly white, and their color gradually develops as they grow.
Their coloring can continue changing throughout their lives, too. You may notice a Ragdoll looking somewhat darker or lighter at different ages, and even changes in body temperature can influence how their coat develops. It’s one of our favorite things about watching Ragdoll kittens grow because their markings, contrast, and colors continue becoming more defined as they mature.
